Eligibility Criteria

The competition is open to researchers and institutions based in Sub-Saharan Africa, as defined by the African UnionNon-African nationals who live in sub-Saharan Africa and work for African-based organizations are also eligible to apply. Organizations based in non-African countries that have regional offices in Sub-Saharan Africa are also eligible to apply so long as the research is conducted in Africa and the funds flow to the African regional office. The principle investigators for each sub-grant application must be based at an African organization or African regional office. To be eligible, an applicant must:

  • Be affiliated with an institution or organization or with a consortium of institutions based in Sub-Saharan Africa. These institutions or organizations can be from academia, the public sector, private sector or civil society;
  • Remain at the same institution for the entire funding period;
  • Have evidence of current involvement in research activities.

It is possible for a group of researchers located in different countries to apply for a grant jointly, so long as the principal investigator is based in Sub-Saharan Africa and funds are dispersed to individuals and/or organizations in the region. Submissions can be made in either Français or English.

All proposals must identify the Principal Investigator of the proposed research program. Only one Principal Investigator (PI) is allowed per application. There is no limit to the number of Co-Investigators or collaborators. If the project includes multiple investigators, the Principal Investigator must be based in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Principal Investigator is accountable for the project and is expected to be actively involved. Applicants with multiple appointments at different institutions are to select only one hosting institution for the application.

Applicants invited to submit a full proposal after the concept note stage will be required to provide evidence of Institutional Support, such as the original signature of the organization's research director along with a letter of support.
